On November 15, 2014, Yonsei University MBA students won the Ministry of Education Award and two teams received the Excellence Award in the ¡°2014 MBA Case Analysis Competition.¡± The competition began in 2009, and was sponsored by Ministry of Industry and Ministry of Education and co-hosted by the Yonsei University Graduate School of Business and Money Today Networks. The competition requires an analysis of a major domestic company¡¯s business case that then forms the basis for a presentation of proposed alternative management for the company¡¯s future. The winner of the Ministry of Education Award in this year¡¯s competition was a  ¡°Fresh People¡± team of members of the Corporate MBA entering class of 2013: Jung-Yoon Yoo, Yoon-Ji Oh, Won-Seok Lee, and Ja-Yong Song. The recipients of the Excellence Award were the ¡°NuovoShinhan¡± team (current students of Corporate MBA 2013: Sung-Hoon Lee, Yoon-Seok Lee, Kyung-Hee Kim, and Young-Min Shim) and the ¡°Blue Label¡± team (current students of Finance MBA 2014: Hyun-Joon Park and Joo-Hyun Ham).

This year¡¯s Case Study Competition had stricter screening procedures than ever before. Contestants had to choose one of two topics: ¡°Establishing an effective integrated marketing strategy, in terms of 5P, which will help Shinhan Bank run its financial mission¡± and ¡°Establishing a strategy for Shinhan Bank during today¡¯s low-growth economy that will secure new growth engines for sustainable development.¡± The preliminary round began with submitting topic-related reports. Eight teams entered the final round. The final round was left to be evaluated by professors, business consultants, and corporate executives.

Jung-Yoon Yoo, a member of the ¡°Fresh People¡± team that won the Ministry of Education Award, revealed his thoughts on receiving the award, ¡°As a step towards finishing my MBA, I earned great experience, and I especially feel glad that the outcome of the results stem from trust and studying together with my teammates for two years.¡±

Although no team members came from the financial industry, they were able to achieve good results through the courage and teamwork gained while attending school. Not only knowledge, but classroom methods of attending lessons, quickly reading documents, and performing tasks with discussions for two years were skills they honed to proceed through this year¡¯s case competition. Creating their own creative proposals through teamwork was considered the key factor in winning this year¡¯s award.

Ms. Yoo emphasized, ¡°The Case Analysis Competition is a good opportunity to verify for oneself the attributes acquired in class: knowledge, leadership, and teamwork. The most important thing is that you¡¯re tireless throughout the long period of preparing for the preliminary and final rounds and having healthy discussions among team members to derive the best plan.¡± She also recommended active participation by juniors in the business case analysis competitions.
