Job Description

The Washington Post seeks a dedicated, energetic journalist to join our breaking-news team in Seoul, which plays a critical role in The Post’s round-the-clock operations. A primary focus will be covering live news as it unfolds in the United States and around the globe during daytime hours in Seoul – overnight in Washington.

This role also comes with the potential to work occasional shifts as a flex editor on the desk, so candidates with at least some editing experience, or an interest in editing, are particularly encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate will possess strong news radar, sharp storytelling skills, and a demonstrated talent for finding emerging stories and angles. Candidates should be committed to speed, clarity and accuracy and should revel in the adrenaline rush that comes from shifting rapidly from subject to subject while reaching a massive digital audience. The bulk of stories launched by the breaking-news teams require rapid turnaround, so comfort with writing on deadline is essential.

The most qualified candidates will bring three to five years of professional experience as a journalist at an English-language publication, with at least two years spent in breaking news. All candidates should have a clear grasp of how to quickly report out major storylines in the United States and across the Asia-Pacific region. Fluency in a foreign language is a plus, as is familiarity with Factiva, Dataminr and other digital tools.

This position will be staffed through TWP South Korea LLC in South Korea, subject to local legal requirements. There will be a preference for candidates already based in the region, but we may consider applicants from within our organization who are currently located in the United States. This position will be staffed on a five-day shift that includes a weekend day; it will be based in Seoul and is not eligible for remote work.

Those interested should upload a cover letter, résumé and three examples of outstanding coverage (as PDFs) to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 07/03/2022 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Foreign Editor Douglas Jehl, Deputy Managing Editor Sharif Durhams, and Seoul Hub Editor Kendra Nichols.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.
